Boyz n the Hood, Menace II Society, Above the Rim, Juice, Jungle Fever, Do the Right Thing, Poetic Justice, Friday, South Central, Higher Learning, New Jack City, Dead Presidents… All great movies. But like with The Naked Gun flicks and Scary Movie films – every genre’s gotta have it’s parodies and spoofs. And African-American movies have got some great ones.
Our favorites? Keenan Ivory Wayans’ I’m Gonna Git You Sucka and his brothers Shawn and Marlon’s Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood. Especially that second one!
One of the stand-out scenes in Don’t Be a Menace… comes when the boys head to the liquor store to pick up an ice cream and some candy bars. The Asian shopkeepers are suspicious, paranoid that two black dudes are gonna be shoplifting. And completely miss the white guy filling up bags and emptying the register!
