The sky lights up flashing neon and bullet casings litter the ground from above. They’re coming from a minigun being shot from a helicopter. It looks like someone’s seriously annoyed the Mexican military…

That someone? Drug cartel leader Juan Francisco Patrón Sánchez, the head of the infamous Beltrán Leyva cartel. Otherwise known as ‘El H2‘, Sánchez was taken out in a surprise attack alongside eleven of his crew.

Attacks like these in urban areas are all but unheard of, but authorities are standing by their decision. The Governor of Nayarit state, Roberto Sandoval Castañeda, said the operation was a huge success…
