Mosul, Iraq. A courageous but determined group of animal aid workers from an Austrian charity arrive with one thing on their mind… Saving as many animals as they can. Their destination? Mosul Zoo. The team from Vienna-based Four Paws arrived and were unbelievably saddened by what they saw: An entire zoo full of dead animals.
But as they surveyed the damage, they stumbled across two brave animals who had yet to give up. A lion and a bear. So they put all their efforts into saving these two. And, after a lot of hard work and TLC, they managed it.
The city of Mosul has been left devastated by war and ISIS have made it all but impossible for anything to work in the city. As such, zoo workers stopped working and feeding the animals. Locals would occasionally feed them scraps, but they were often to frightened to leave their homes or couldn’t afford the spare meat.
Here’s just some of the incredible pictures that the Four Paws team managed to take at Mosul Zoo in their time. The work was dangerous, but worth it.
